Spread over 604 sq km the Pangong Tso lace is an absolute must see during a trip to Leh Ladakh and very few people miss out on this beautiful destination during a Leh trip. With the LOC passing right through the lake inner line permit used to be necessary to visit the Pangong tso till 2014 however with the new rule Indian nationals no longer need any permit to visit Pangong Tso.
'Pagal Nala' is so called because of its changing size during the course of a day. A little stream in the morning the 'Nala' by afternoon becomes unnegotiable. Make sure you cross Pagal Nala near lukung on the way to Pangong before 12!
Pangong Tso is located approx 175 kms from Leh town across the Chang la pass. The route passes through Tangste and can be reached in about 5 hours.
Chang La Pass
The gateway to the Changthang, Chang La at 17,590 ft is the third highest motorable pass. At the pass there is a shrine dedicated to Chang La baba after who the pass is also named. Indian army serves tea here free of cost to tourists visiting Chang La! Road down from Changla Pass leads through to Tangste. One needs to cross a few more villages to reach Pangong Tso from Tangste village.
The Marsimik La pass built by ITBP at 18634 ft also makes unsubstantiated claims of being the highest motorable pass in the world! Marsimik La is located on the northern-most tip of the Changthang Plateau in Chang-Chemno Range. 45 kms on a dirt track from Spangmik leads to Marsimik La pass. Marsimek La pass is approximately 35 kms from Pangong Tso.
At Darbuk village near Tangstey village stands a chain of war memorials with regimental insignias in commemoration of the soldiers who lost their lives during the Indo-Chinese war of 1962. Some of the historic army bunkers and trenches used during war time are still present here.
Stay near Pangong Tso
Tangstey although about an hour away from Pangong Tso is a good place to spend the night as there are much more stay options that are available here. You could also stay at Spangmik or Lukung which is much more closer to Pangong Tso.
